Mondi Świecie plays a crucial role in the European branch of the paper industry. They provide high-quality containerboard paper grades and strive to enrich them with technological advancements that will meet the various needs of their clients. What we see as the most admirable value they present is that not only do they strive to outdo themselves in matters of offered quality, but they also put an exceptional emphasis on sustainability. Mondi’s mission is to contribute to the success of their customers and to assure a sustainable future and we are glad that we could be a part of their work.

Our designer delivered 3D models with animations to all trainings based on materials sent by client and designed neumorphic UI for app referring to physical interfactes of factory machines.

Traditional training in a workplace is not well adjusted to the ever-changing world and the new generations of employees. It lacks efficiency, flexibility and takes up too much time for both the trainees and the trainers. What is more, it became nearly impossible to be held during the pandemic as crucial precautions must have been taken.
The usual lecture from a specialist explaining how to operate certain appliances and how they work is not half as effective as interactive training can be. By implementing technological solutions you can increase people’s engagement, speed up the knowledge acquisition process and make it more memorable. In addition, workers undergoing VR or AR training can be expected to put their knowledge into practice far quicker and with more confidence than those after a formal training session.

In the virtual environment, people are presented with a chance of viewing things that are not possible to observe otherwise. They can interact with models of giant appliances with a zero risk factor. For Mondi Świecie it was the perfect solution as they prioritize effectiveness, innovation, and wellbeing in their workplace.

We created an innovative training platform where the animated machine models are viewed in 3D or AR mode enriched with useful information in text, graphic or video format. The application serves two roles – the admin’s one enabling user’s management in which the test results from every schooling session can be accessed and the progress made can be analysed. The second one was designated for users to allow them to take part in training sessions and undergo knowledge assessment afterwards.
What one could call already our trademark we remained flexible throughout the whole process to meet every need of our customer. We organised regular meetings and check-ups with specialists from Mondi Świecie and that surely contributed to the success of our collaboration.
The application is written in Kotlin for the Android platform using ARCore and Sceneform from Google with UI optimization for tablets. In the process, we added the feature that enabled quick and intuitive addition of new training – thanks to that everyone can make a new training module effortlessly. As for the interface we employed the neumorphic design that fits within the industrial look and matches Mondi visual identification along with their needs.
Apart from creating the app, our work implied creation of training materials. Our graphic designer stood up to the challenge and created real life-like models of devices used by Mondi Świecie along with animations that reflected their operation in every detail. Thanks to that, trainees get to know how to utilize and maintain machines without the necessity of opening appliances (which in this industry is practically impossible). They can interact with models and view particular elements separately to learn more about its functionalities. Paper industry novices can now gain firsthand experience by simply following planned out steps and interacting with models in a user-friendly interface in a conducive atmosphere.

We made sure that the project was truly tailored to Mondi’s team expectations. Apart from the AR functionality that was designed to work inside the factory, we prepared a 3D mode that can be used anywhere so that employees can stay connected and grow, the distance and circumstances notwithstanding.
This case called for a great deal of creativity and that is what we put our minds and hearts into. We designed a complete scheme of introducing new training sessions. Therefore, each trainer can create a new tutorial, add the following steps and information layer according to the company’s needs. We worked hard to deliver an independent solution that anyone can manage without further consultations and it adds great value to the project.
Usually, AR solutions involve small-scale objects. In this case, we were facing gigantic industrial machines that cannot fit into a cadre. Given that, we had to invent a smart way of planning out and detecting AR markers inside the factory.
The same thing that made our work special was one of the greatest challenges we encountered. Designing a way of presenting and introducing a new training session in a user-friendly way took quite a lot of thinking. In order to make the addition of each schooling intuitive, we designed a scheme in which a trainer can arrange the following steps to be taken by a trainee. Thematically linked parts of the machine can be presented in one highlighted view and enriched by animations along with text, graphic or video format information. By enabling different formats we made our solution hybrid in a sense.
What is more, the chosen frameworks weren’t able to give us what we needed regarding many animations and functionalities of each model or an AR mode. Furthermore, sometimes they didn’t respond well to the truly advanced models and we had to construct our own rules of models’ creation. During development, we prepared a modular architecture of the project so we can easily adapt new 3D/AR engines.
